Double Bevel Marquetry and Dovetailed Box

This course is an introduction to both marquetry and hand cut joinery. Finished product is a pencil box with flip top lid, dimensions: 3.5” wide by 10” long by 3.25” tall.

The first half of the course is focused on traditional double-bevel marquetry– the practice of cutting and arranging wood veneers to create images and patterns. Albert’s instruction on marquetry will be based on his forthcoming Lost Art Press book, “Marquetry for Everyone.”   

Day one is focused on theory and process. We’ll discuss the geometry of double-bevel marquetry, go over tools and materials, and get you started with proper sawing technique. 

By the end of the day, you’ll be able to inlay a piece into another— the basic building block of all marquetry work. 

On day two, we’ll work together hands-on to create a simple floral pattern. We’ll then apply our panels to a substrate and prepare it to be incorporated into the box. 

The second half of the course focuses on hand cut joinery and other hand tool methods based on Albert’s first book. “Complete Starter Guide to Making Wooden Boxes.” 

On days three and four, we’ll go over the process for cutting through dovetail joints and cut the joinery for the main box carcase. 

On the final day, we’ll affix a bottom to the box and use the marquetry panel we made earlier as a flip top.

Albert will also demonstrate how to build your own shooting board.

The price includes all materials (wood, veneer, glue, carbon paper etc), prepared stock, and access to marquetry specific tools (fret saw, pin vise & drill bits).  Each class also includes a light breakfast and lunch every day.
